In The Piney WoodsInspired by actual events, “In the Piney Woods” chronicles the lives of two East Texas youth who, at an early age, realized they were destined to remain connected. Set in the 1980s, some may view this as a coming-of-age story. “In the Piney Woods” is a journey of acceptance, self-actualization, and awareness that social norms often dictate an environment but should never dictate the person you are destined to become.
From before entering Kindergarten, Jordie and Jer were convinced they were brothers. Jordie, a redheaded spitfire, lives in Tate and Jer, a poor black kid with aspirations to play professional football, lives across the tracks in Lucas. Jordie’s dream was a life on Broadway. Daily, the boys would meet up in the culvert under the train tracks that separated Tate from Lucas; they had some of the greatest adventures known to man. Inseparable, the boys quickly became known as JJ. You rarely saw one without the other. |
Jordie’s family owned the lumber mill that was the economic backbone of the community. Many of the Lucas men worked at the mill. When a larger, more technology advanced mill opened in nearby Lufkin, the Tate mill closed. After, Jordie’s mom turned the commissary into a neighborhood grocery that became the social hub of the community.
Shortly before Kindergarten began, Jer’s dad took ill and passed. Needing assistance during the illness and with his two younger sisters, Jer’s mom kept him home. Jordie, not wanting Jer to get behind the other kids, would meet up in the culvert afterschool to share what he learned in kindergarten. Throughout elementary school, Jordie and Jer’s bond grew. When Jer’s house was destroyed in a hurricane, Jordie begged his mom to give them the lodge beneath the store as their new home. The blending of the two families began. Jer’s family was the first black family to live on the Tate side of the tracks.
It was during middle school when Jer’s dreams of playing football came to light. Jordie’s love for music and theatre were confirmed. Together, though they were charting their own paths, they began to realize they were becoming more than being brothers. Their mothers, noticing the affection, encouraged them to stay true to who they are.
High School presented unfounded challenges. Entering high school, Jordie’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jer, always acting as the adult along with his commitment to Jordie’s happiness, promised her she would see them walk across the stage when they graduate. It was during this time both boys became conflicted with their feelings for each other. They began to experience how society dictates one should live and they discovered the façade they must create if they are to remain true to themselves.
“In The Piney Woods” is a complex analysis of one’s growth from adolescence to adulthood and the conflicts once must ensue to live the life they are destined. Subscribing to the mantra, “Be known for the content of your character,” both young men fulfill their dreams of a professional career in football and on Broadway. It is not until one of their life’s pivots do the men find the courage to publicly be who they are.
Whether through religion, social mores, or limiting beliefs, the struggles, hurdles, roadblocks, and victories Jordie and Jer experience are real. They existed in the 1980s, they existed when their careers were beginning to change, and they remain today. Though Tate, Texas is a fictional town as are the characters, the journey, the conflicts, and the triumphs are based on actual events on factual dates.
